  • 1 (12 fluid ounce) bottle dark German beer
  • 1 cup thinly sliced onions
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon caraway seeds
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 6 uncooked bratwurst links
  • 6 hoagie buns, split and toasted
  • 1 ½ cups shredded Cheddar cheese
  • 1 ½ cups shredded lettuce (Optional)
