  • 1 cup warm buttermilk (105 to 115 degrees F)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • ¼ cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon water
